A 55 year old woman suffered vertebral compression fracture in the… A 55 year old woman suffered vertebral compression fracture in the region T8- T 10. A MRI scan 2 days before vertebroplasty showed no evidence of softtissue abnormalities or compression to T10 on the spine. Percutaneousvertebroplasty was performed on the patient and shortly after the operationparalysis of both legs occurred. CT scan revealed bone cement in the treatedepidural space. Surgery was performed to remove the cement which resultedin little clinical improvement.  A second operation was then performed to remove the remaining cement which resulted in the subsequent production of bloody fluid which compressed the spinal cord. 49 days after vertebroplasty, aphysical examination revealed sensory loss below T6. 62 days after the operation the spinal cord was observed to be pale and the dura matter was yellow in color at T8 – T10. 13 months after the procedure the patientremains paraplegic . Report on what operation was performed, and whyyou chose that particular operation over alternatives. Report on what went wrong and how thiscould be addressed to alterations to both cement and procedure.
