Developmental changes in childhood and adolescence are tied to theindividual’s age, but are not synonymous with the aging process. As such, a person’s biological age does not necessarily refer to any standard set of life circumstances or factors, such as the exact age of puberty’s onset or emotional maturity. Similarly, two people may be the same biological age, but are working their way through different areas of psychosocial development. It is important to consider this when treating children and adolescents who misuse substances. Considerations must be male for the child’s or adolescent’s familial structure, personal attitudes, and expectations, as research has shown these may be linked to later substance use.  : 1.
